After years of struggle, Uttarakhand cinema finally sawn at the end of tunnel when first Garhwali feature film “JAGWAL” (Meaning – The long wait) produced by Parashar Gaur released on May 4th 1983 at Mavalankar Hall, Rafi Marg, New Delhi.

“JAGWAL” is a brain child of Parashar Gaur who has spent a sizeable chunk of his life in promoting Garhwali culture. Even though it took a lot of struggle as he conceived the idea of making a film in 1975. It was not till 1982 that the project took off. During this period Mr. Gaur went through a hell of time. He decided to abandon the banner and started a new banner under the name of “ANCHALIK FILMS”. Facing problems he finally come out with flying colors and released the first hit film in Garhwali boli.

The main strength of the film was in the way it captures the innocence of the Pahadi people.

It is a Family melodrama which revolves around a young woman. The story goes like this - A young wife had to wait seven years for her husband as he is arrested and sentenced on murder charges. This happened immediately after their marriage. Her husband advises her to marry his younger brother or run away from home. However, she refuses to follow her husband's advice and decides to wait for him.

Mr. Gaur’s long experience with the theatre helped him to bring together the best talents available on the Garhwali stage and obtain their full cooperation. Film was made in record time of 28 days and passed by censor in just 24 hours; the film was first screened in a non commercial hall at Mavalankar Hall, Rafi Marg, New Delhi. The film attracted a large number of people from and around the neighborhood of the capital with several travelling aa the way from places as Saharanpur, Meerut and Modi Nagar. The responses were tremendous. It appeared that the entire Garhwali population had descended on the theatre.

The tickets priced at Rs 5 were sold for Rs 50 and a few even went for whopping Rs 100. After “JAGWAL”, there is a long series of films that have been released so far. Among them are Kabhi Sukh – Kabhi Dukh, Ghar Jawain, Kauthik, Udankar, Pyaru Rumal, Samlaon, Puli, Madhuli, Bantwaru, Jeetu Bagdwal, Chakrachaal, Chwati Bwari. In Kumauni, only one film has been released named “Megha Aa”.

Chander Singh Rahi Ji

Chander Singh Rahi Ji (born Chander Singh Negi, 28 March 1942 – 10 January 2016) was a prominent folk singer, balladeer, musician, poet, storyteller, and cultural conservator from  Uttarakhand , India.
